Based on circadian rhythm, a recent study shows we burn the most calories midday to early evening (about 10% more) compared to the evening. It is best to have lunch as the heaviest meal of the day as it allows for time for the body to burn the energy produced rather than be wasted because we are sleeping.
Eating heavier meals in the evening have shown associations with obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
Digestion slows in the evening as our body prepares for rest. You could be more prone to having acid reflux if you decide to lie down after a big meal and have a less restful sleep.
Studies show that insulin sensitivity is highest in the morning and lowest in the evening, so skipping breakfast and having a large dinner, may increase you blood sugars even though you are eating the same exact foods. Proving that timing is EVERYTHING.
Not to mention that when you skip earlier meals, by dinnertime you are likely to be ravenous. Therefore, you are more likely to reach for unhealthy options like chips, sweets and processed carbohydrates.
And if that was not bad enough, you could GAIN WEIGHT! Your body is preparing to turn food into fat later in the day, so those evening calories are more likely to turn into fat.
My biggest meal is midday and I feel well rested, have less brain fog and don’t have to work so hard on keeping my waistline from growing.
